The Estonian Athletics Association has submitted a request to the government to organize the U20 European Championships at the Kadriorg Stadium in Tallinn in July. Now, the opportunity arose for Estonia to also host the U23 European Championships a week before.
“Initially set to take place in Bergen, Norway, the European Athletics U23 Championships were canceled due to local coronavirus restrictions. We have signaled to the European Athletics Association that we are prepared to host the competition on 8-11 July in Tallinn. On Tuesday, the European association confirmed that it would happily see Tallinn as the host city,” commented the president of Estonian Athletics Association, Erich Teigamägi.
Teigamägi said Estonia is in a good position to host the European U23 Championships, as the U20 championships will also take place on Kadriorg Stadium a week later. “We had the unique opportunity to react fast and thanks to our strong readiness, both competitions can be organized safely and successfully. Our organizational partners and hotels in Tallinn are also up for the challenge,” Teigamägi added.
An application for a special permit to host the U20 competition has already been presented to the government and an application to host the U23 will be presented by the Estonian Athletics Association as soon as possible.
